THE PURPOSE OF HUMAN LIFE – A RATIONAL APPROACH
1. THINGS IN PERSPECTIVE
1.1. For thousands of years now, humanity has allowed to be divided itself or compartmentalized on the basis of Religions or Faiths.
1.2. In the past, wars have been fought over religions, people have been forcibly converted from one “faith” to another or killed.
1.3. Even now debates keep raging and worse, religion based terror is endangering the very existence of mankind as truly Secular specie.
1.4. The development of the legal Jurisprudence, civil and criminal, the supreme law of the “Constitution”, based on the universal doctrine of not holding anyone guilty or wrong unless proved, has not been able to address the religion based rift and conflicts for the simple reason that it is simply beyond the competence and comprehension of the formal structure of the Civil Society, namely the State and its organs, to deal with this. At best, it just postulates that Religion is after all a personal matter of individuals, when, in reality, religious ceremonies and functions are not held in homes alone but in public places of worship and even on public roads as well.
2. WILL RESPECTING ALL FAIHS HELP TO END THIS FISSURE?
2.1. Speaking about or practicing respect for all religions or faiths has, no doubt enabled mankind to avoid religious wars of the past and to live in peace with each other but this alone has not helped humanity much in transcending the religious barriers, especially in marriages and common celebration of religious festivals.
2.2. The microscopic minority among the elite educated urban population has indeed transcended this barrier in the sense that a woman and a man belonging to different faiths now get married to each other and register the marriage under the Civil Marriages Act, without resorting to conversion of either. This minority is indeed showing the way to mankind at large but is too small in number to organize themselves, campaign and bring about a welcome transformation.
3. WHAT SHOULD WE DO THEN?
3.1. The advancement of the human mind after the second world war in the areas of technology and the ability to think more rationally and articulate the same has been transformational indeed.
3.2. In the last twenty five years alone, the minds of people all over the world have achieved transformational progress in their IQ, SQ [Social Quotient], EQ [emotional quotient] and more important ,in RQ [ rationality quotient] , than what was achieved in the past two centuries!
3.3. The positive results of this are that—
3.3.1. People are far less superstitious than ever before now, especially the Generation-Y;
3.3.2. They attach much less importance for religious rituals which have pre-occupied human minds for thousands of years;
3.3.3. They are able to make much superior personal choices and decisions than their immediate and far off ancestors.
4. WELCOME THE GREEN SHOOTS OF RATIONALITY WHICH CANNOT CONFLICT WITH ANY FAITH
4.1. The above said collective transformation of the human minds has brought in its wake the following RATIONAL POSTULATES and QUESTIONS, which, if ANSWERED, nourished and articulated by the collective will of mankind, can make our dreams of a unified mankind sooner than later and even take mankind to an exalted state,—
4.1.1. God is unitary and at best, FORMLESS, eternal and transcends space and time;
4.1.2. Sin or wrong doing has its moorings in sociological and psychological factors because of which millions get shunted out of the mainstream life in a world dominated by the material philosophy of “the winner takes all” and that civil decrees, Policing and conviction shall not be able to end what we see as a social menace which in reality, emanates from a sense of deprivation—punishment does not wipe out deprivation, reformation can;
4.1.3. Undue emphasis on material success is self defeating;
4.1.4. End cannot justify the means;
4.1.5. Superstition will not win for us God’s patronage; much less take us to salvation;
4.1.6. Since the formless God has created us, should we also not be be very much like him—eternal, transcendental in form and if so, does it lead us to the realisation that we are not the fleeting, perishable entity called the “body” encaged by senses driven desires, looking outside always and not attempting to diagnose or discover our true identitity through introspection and self enquiry ?
4.1.7. Is it our irrevocable destiny that we should continue to live without discovering our true selves, and continue suffer diseases and set backs of all kinds afflicting the depreciating and decaying body machine and our lives?
4.1.8. Is it possible( or desirable) for us to cast off these self imposed shackles of this “existence” perceived by us as “REAL” and promote ourselves to a transcendental state, beyond time, matter, space and causation, to an absolute and not “relative” state in nature? After all even time is a relative measure depending upon the speed of the earth in spinning on its own axis fully once. Even “temperature” is a relative definition since we have fixed that the point at which water boils under normal atmospheric pressure is 100 degree celcious. The temperature of any other entity is measured in relation to this relative definition only.
5.1. Whether, when and how mankind will be able to attain this exalted status, or even agree that such a state is desirable, I have no power or ability to perceive or predict!
5.2. But I do believe that only those who have reached the summit of worldly good through legitimate means and have adequately reached out to and helped those in need, shall ever feel the need to go even higher into the transcendental state, try and attain it.
5.3.Until such time, humanity will be able to enhance its “WELLNESS QUOTIENT” by de-linking happiness from material gains, by not keep sulking when suffering and by reaching out to those in need and help them even by giving away what you need for yourself, irrespective of his or her religious affiliation.
